The Only Living Pickpocket in New York

When a theft goes awry, a veteran pickpocket is sent on a mission through New York to reclaim it.

While not usually the leading man, John Turturo is one of those actors whom you intrinsically trust and will go to see anything he is in. An IYKYK kind of an actor. It was exactly for this reason that I went to see The Only Living Pickpocket in New York (2026) where he is the lead. I wasn’t disappointed. I wasn’t wowed either because it’s not a “wow” kind of movie but I thoroughly enjoyed the excellent acting by the small ensemble cast brought together by a good script.

Last Pickpocket is a good “palate cleanser” of a movie if you’ve had too much of the same horror/Marvel/IMAX movies recently. Poignant and sweet but also sad, this film, which debuted at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, doesn’t pull you dramatically into one genre or another. Instead, it’s a quiet meditation on a man who loves, is loved and tries to do the best he can. I hope this kind of storytelling will always be around and won’t go in the same direction as a pickpocket in an increasingly cashless society.
