A supermom lands a Shark Tank deal, switching roles with her breadwinner husband. He struggles to adapt as a stay-at-home dad to their three daughters.

I can’t believe we live in a world where humor can be mined from the idea that men are so capable in everyday life except when it comes being a parent and husband. I saw Mr. Mom in the 80s, and it tackled the same point (better) but it was also a bit truer to its own time period. The Breadwinner, co-written and starring Nate Bargatze, is a mostly unfunny slog of gags and bits all centered around Nate not knowing how to handle basic household duties when his homemaker wife finds success on Shark Tank.

Bargatze is an engaging comedian whose aw-shucks demeanor can help make his stories funnier and more endearing. But since most of his comedy is in the vein of “aren’t I an idiot?” the movie just frames these thoughts into scenes, so many of which are pulled from his standup that the end credits show his stand-up clips. They’re not even trying. This would be like the new Spider-Man movie showing clips of Tom Holland and Zendaya’s secret wedding because they fell in love in real life too.

I laughed a couple of times, but the movie isn’t remotely as funny as just watching one of Bargatze’s specials. And since I don’t care for Shark Tank, the extended commercial for that show sprinkled throughout went over like a fart at a funeral.
