An employee and her insufferable boss become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. Here, they must overcome past grievances and work together to make it out alive.
Rachel McAdams really needs to be leading more movies. She’s a superstar that hasn’t been at the top of the call sheet in far too long. In Send Help, she plays Linda, a smart but mousy analyst working at some tech firm where she’s constantly overlooked and overworked. When a private plane crash strands her on an island with her newly appointed boss (Dylan O’Brien going full douchebag), the tables have turned and she uses her pluck and know-how, as well as extensive survival skills, to take charge of the situation.
It’s kind of like an extended version of the final act of Triangle of Sadness. At least, on paper. And if that’s all it was, it would be an okay movie. But it takes some turns, some surprising, some expected, and all in service of showcasing McAdams brilliant ability of balancing comedy, drama, horror, and so much more. She’s so good that I wish this was a silly little side project and not her biggest leading role in about a decade. (And speaking of needing more roles – Dennis Haysbert pops in for one scene but really should be on screen more often as well).
Director Sam Raimi (from a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift) uses his particular brand of blending comedy, action and horror to craft an entertaining film, even if it will likely be forgotten in a few weeks. Raimi worked with McAdams on Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which likely created a solid shorthand for them to craft an intriguing character study and surprisingly fun flick.
