A well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker and a wealthy venture capitalist.
The trailer promises a cute movie about guardian angels and life swapping between a rich tech bro and his struggling assistant. The guardian angel, Gabriel, a sad sack struggling helper who wants to be more than he is, is humorously portrayed by Keanu Reeves. Tech Bro Jeff is recent Emmy winner Seth Rogen. And the assistant, Arj, is by triple threat writer-director Aziz Ansari. In Jeff’s life, Arj discovers that money might actually be a big help to surviving this life and doesn’t want to go back to living in his car as a gig worker.
The movie really shines a light on wealth disparity and how oppressive and inescapable the gig economy work life is. At times it can feel a bit pedantic in doing so, but there were moments of the movie where I choked up, and moments where I actually applauded (and I hate that). Good Fortune is dripping with great scenes and great moments, and I wholeheartedly support its thesis that tacos make everything better. Reeves is funny, while playing things almost completely straight. Ansari’s Arj is a great everyman hero even as he falls further into dickishness. His potential romance with fellow gig worker and big dreamer, Elena (Keke Palmer, always wonderful) plays out in both timelines, and isn’t typical romantic movie fodder.
It may not hold onto my memory with the onslaught of Oscar season films about to hit the screens, but it was fun movie regardless.
