Review

It is easy to kick the MCU while it’s down. While the oversaturation of the superhero genre is a thing, and the lackluster performance of some of the recent films is valid, there’s really no reason this movie should be as dull as it is. Anthony Mackie is a charismatic presence, and he’s aided by cinematic royalty in the form of Harrison Ford (picking up for the late William Hurt as the now-president Thaddeus Ross), but engaging characters aren’t enough to build a movie around or pull the Marvel Cinematic Universe out of the hole it’s in.

It doesn’t help that this movie’s greatest ties are to arguably the worst film in its entire cannon – the supremely forgettable (and the better for it) The Incredible Hulk, the second MCU flick from all the way back in 2008. How young we all were back then.

Ford at least creates an engaging presence, and the movie isn’t bad in the way Iron Man 2 and Thor were just bad, it’s just boring and ultimately completely forgettable.
